| DESCRIPTION | As part of this study-unit, students will perform supervised placements in medical imaging, radiotherapy and/or related areas under the supervision of qualified radiographers or other health care professionals responsible for that placement area. The placements may be undertaken locally or abroad. This study-unit caters for: (i) outgoing radiography students performing their ERASMUS+ traineeship mobility abroad in an approved host institution; (ii) incoming radiography students performing their ERASMUS+ mobility at the University of Malta and approved clinical sites; and/or (iii) local radiography students performing clinical placements at approved sites in Malta. Placement sites and learning objectives will be aligned with the students’ programme of study and academic requirements. The clinical experience is supervised by qualified radiographers or health professionals and aims to provide students with practical learning across a variety of radiographic settings. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is: - For the student to further develop clinical competence and gain experience in radiotherapy, medical imaging department, or related departments, either locally or abroad; - To allow students to experience and compare clinical practice across different institutional or national contexts; - To enhance student understanding of safety, person-centred care, and inter-professional collaboration; - To support the development of transferable and reflective skills in diverse healthcare settings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply principles of radiography to the area of placement; - Demonstrate and apply care as applicable in the area of placement selected; - Develop clinical and transferable skills for different radiotherapy treatments, medical imaging procedures and related areas; - Evaluate and reflect upon the role of medical imaging and/or radiotherapy examinations and related areas in the delivery of care to patients; - Demonstrate an understanding of clinical protocols, workflows, and standards in medical imaging and/or radiotherapy settings; - Evaluate and compare radiography practices across different clinical environments, including international placements; - Explain and reflect on the principles of radiation protection, patient safety, and quality assurance in diverse healthcare settings; - Identify and interpret the ethical, legal, and cultural considerations that influence the delivery of radiographic care in different contexts. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply radiographic techniques, communication strategies and patient care approaches appropriate to the placement setting; - Demonstrate safe and effective in practice under supervision in line with local and international standards; - Evaluate the delivery of care under the supervision of a qualified radiographer or a health care professional as applicable to the area of placement; - Critically reflect on their professional development and clinical experience using evidence-based approaches; - Adapt their skills and behaviour to suit different clinical environments, patient populations, and institutional expectations; - Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, showing initiative, responsibility, and respect for diversity. |
